Aromatherapy sooths the mind & alleviates pain

The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience that is associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in such terms”.

Healing Home

Pain is the main cause for patients to seek medical care and can have a psychological impact. There is a significant relationship between the psyche and pain symptoms, as well as between pain and negative emotions.

Pain is the body's defense mechanism. The body is waving a red flag at us to slow down and pay attention – pain nudges us to protect a body part while healing and avoid future harm during the healing process.

Essential oils, being derived from plants, are used to treat illness as well as to enhance physical and psychological well-being.

Pain is also "the emotional response to a sensation", therefore, it is equally as important to help soothe the mind and not just the body. According to science, emotions and stress can worsen pain. Since pain is a mind-body connection, aromatherapy can act supportively to both.

Our sense of smell is the only sense directly connected with the emotional part of the brain. Aromatherapy is ideally paired with pain reduction techniques as it can help relax the mind. When the mind is relaxed, the body can relax. Aromatherapy targets the limbic system, which controls emotions, memories, smells and behaviors. Inhalation is the fastest and safest way for the scented oils to reach the olfactory nerves and brain. Aromatherapy triggers a chemical reaction in the brain – such as the feel-good hormone dopamine – in response to the oil, soothing the mind and healing the body.
