Ask around before installing a new pool

Ask around before installing a new pool

Making the decision to install a new pool versus refurbishing the existing pool, will cost quite a bit of money. Yet a quick decision based on price only will definitely bite you.

On the internet or any of the social media platforms, you will find numerous “service providers” who post pics of them working on pools and who promise you the best service and product ever. What you may, however, experience may turn into a nightmare story.

Lic Pool Centre is currently the only Namibian pool builder company registered at the NSPI (www.nspi.co.za) in South Africa. This watch-dog organisation over pool builders protects the interests of consumers and has already helped a number of Namibians (who got served the short stick by a short-sighted pool builder) over the last few years.

Requesting quotations from various installers gives you the peace of mind that you have explored all the avenues in getting the correct pool. It goes without saying that an installer with a fixed business address which has been in operation for many years, is the safest option.

Installing a pool can take two weeks or longer, depending on what you want done. You will thus have to communicate with this person on a regular basis. The construction may be dusty and having strangers in your yard is never nice. Thus feeling at ease with the installer and the team is important. Even after the pool was installed and all monies were paid, it may happen that the person or company needs to return to do repairs under guarantee.

Ask the installer for references (good and bad). Mistakes can happen during an installation and it is very important to hear from an outsider, how the installer handled such a problem. Once you have the various quotes, I always suggest going back to the installer you liked most.

If your preferred installer’s quote was too expensive, negotiate a price to fit your budget. Never ever make your choice based on price only. Before you accept the final quote, it is important that the installer visits the house, to see the place where the pool needs to be installed. Things like access to the site, position of the pump room, correct size of the pool, flow of rainwater around the pool, type of pool lights etc need to be discussed.

In the next edition I’ll provide tips on what to look out for when the actual pool arrives on site.

Until next time.
