Be bold and brilliant with fabric paint
Be bold and brilliant with fabric paint
WHAT YOU WILL NEED
- Fabric paint in various colours
- Paint brushes in different sizes
- Separate plate on which you mix paint colours
- Thin wooden plank or strong plastic bag
- Apron to protect your clothing
- Small bowl with water
- Fabric item i.e. denim, tablecloth or cushion cover
Step 1
Roughly draw your design on your fabric item with a pencil.
Step 2
Place pieces of scrap paper on the fabric where you are NOT going to paint – you do not want any fabric paint on areas that are not part of your design.
Step 3
Slide the thin wooden plank or plastic bag inside your item: If it’s a denim skirt, pants or cushion cover, this will protect the back side. If you are painting a tablecloth, simply put it flat on the surface that you are painting on. Remember to wear your apron.
Step 4
Paint your design. You might need to do 3 to 4 layers, letting it dry in between.
Put only a little paint on the plate, add more colours to mix (i.e. white with yellow to create a tint). Start with a little paint and add until you have the right amount (you do not want to sit with a lot of left-overs on your plate).
Let your final design dry overnight.
Step 5
Turn your denim or cushion cover inside out and iron on the reverse side (no steam) for about 1 minute, rotating the iron over the design. Wait for it to cool down and repeat 9 times to set the paint into the fabric.
Final
Idea: Get a few friends together and do fabric painting for a team-building event or paint babygrows together at the baby-shower.
