Bring wonderful nature indoors

Bring wonderful nature indoors

Since the Dulux Colour of the Year is Wild Wonder™, I thought it suitable to share with you in this month’s issue of HouseFinder how one can bring nature into your home by introducing plants to your indoor living space.

In today’s busy lifestyle where everything needs to happen fast, stress has become humankind’s most horrifying enemy. Thank goodness for plants! Once again it has been proven that plants have a calming effect on the human brain. They purify our air and sooth our senses.

For plants to grow successfully indoors, one must consider a few essentials such as light intensity, air-conditioning, temperature and sufficient growing space.

Modern architectural tendencies are to design with large windows to capture as much as possible indirect sunlight into your house. Should you have an older home with smaller windows, you could consider special grow lights for those areas where plants will be accommodated indoors. Light intensity is rather important, for most indoor plants require much indirect sunlight to develop into healthy plants. Water is the next most important, and also the growing medium which will either make or break the process. If the soil medium is not a good commercial indoor potting medium, with good drainage and good organic substance, you might not get sufficient water offtake, and root rot and many other problems will start. Weak plants are easy prey for plant pests. Make sure to create the best growing conditions so you have healthy indoor plants that will give you pleasure instead of worries.

Ficus LeafPlants represent a natural element in your indoor spaces and other elements can be easily combined with indoor plants. Enhance the look with a woven basket, a wooden potholder, or natural-looking clay pots. Boost your pot plant with natural pebbles, moss, bark chips, or nut shells which can be used as a mulch for decorative purposes, adding to your selection of natural elements that you bring indoors together with the plants.
Consider getting indoor plants such as the Ficus species (that literally look like small trees inside your home), palms, Philodendron varieties, delicious monsters, peace lilies or ferns. The list is endless. Do use decorative plant pot accessories that will complement your plant for it to make a proper statement and be a focal point in the home.

Plants may be expensive these days, but there is nothing more purifying and calming than a few well-chosen and well-placed indoor plants in your home… yes home, because a home without a plant, is only a house.
