Creating depth and texture: How to master monochromatic rooms
Monochromatic spaces may appear overwhelming, but mixing diverse colour tones, textures, and accents can provide depth and break up too much of one colour in a room. Working with one colour is very much doable and easy to put together.Play it safe
If the idea of going monochrome makes you nervous, try starting along the lines of a neutral colour scheme. A less intimidating initiation into the trend will result from playing with different tones of whites, creams, tans, and browns. You can also start small by having an accent wall with the main hue and adding another shade with furnishings such as a couch or armchair.
Pick a main hue
When styling with a particular colour it is important that you choose a single dominating hue. Using both the dark and light shades of the same colour produces a perfect flow in the space and allows for a great setting for artwork and sculptures. Depth and contrast can be added by playing with different shades or tones of the colour that can add contrast.
Cool vs Warm tones
It will be better if warm and cool tones are not combined. The underlying tones will conflict. Cool toned colours can be combined with lighter hues like white, cream, baby blue etc. Keep the area simple, but feel free to add gold or bronzed elements to give it a touch of elegance and sophistication.
Texture and Print
To avoid the interior from looking flat, do include texture and prints. Different fabrics such as velvet, wool and furnishings of wood plus sleek gold and silver accents add interest to a room. Throws, carpets, pillows and window treatments are a great way to incorporate patterns and texture.
Art and Lighting
Decorate the space by bringing in large paintings, sculptures and chandeliers, which are a perfect addition to monochromatic living and dining rooms.
