Decorating with eco-friendly decor

Decorating with eco-friendly decor

Creators of brands and interior designers are increasingly becoming more aware of the environmental impact of production processes. Similarly, consumers with a first world view are opting for sustainably produced, functional yet aesthetic designs. Eco-friendly designing focuses on using materials that increase home efficiency while reducing the environmental impact.

Below is a list of sustainable materials to help you get started on a green journey towards an eco-friendly home.

Recycled wood: Using recycled wood can help create spaces that are contemporary and rustic while also being kind to nature. Think of repurposing wood used in old buildings and furniture.

Wood generally can be used to add warmth and character to any room. When pondering some previously loved wood, let your thoughts wander to reconstructions such as a table/kitchen island, wood flooring, support beams, wooden ceilings or ceiling beams.

Recycled metal: Whether dull or shiny or rusty, recycled metals create stunning interior spaces and sculptures. You may not need to go as far as remelting the material, as there are plenty of cool things you can get out of metal such as lighting fixtures, upcycled furniture (see photo below), window frames, roof covering, panel products
and more.

Natural fabrics: Organic by nature, these have grown in popularity over the years. Natural textiles are low cost, can offer a wide selection of textures, colours and patterns plus they can be easily sourced for interior and exterior use. Fabrics such as rattan, linen, cotton, bamboo, wool, and silk come to mind, although some are not vegan-friendly. From curtains to rugs to wallpaper to light fittings, the choices are legion.

Recycled plastic: How and where will you incorporate recycled plastic in interior decorating without it looking tacky? Well, there are companies out there that can design products with this material through innovative thinking. One of those brands is ECONYL® - a company which uses recycled plastic to create nylon products that are used in a variety of products for personal and home enhancement. Their website is well worth a visit.

Electricals and appliances: The goal is to get the most out of heating and cooling while using as little energy as possible. Energy-efficient appliances or solar-generated electricity could initially be on the pricey side but can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars while lowering the user’s carbon footprint.

Energy-efficient appliances can prevent emission of greenhouse gasses and pollutants which can be harmful to your health and the environment. We suggest you check the eco-friendly status of for instance dishwashers, air conditioners and refrigerators to curb your footprint and also save money in the long run.
