Ditch your old patterns, let’s renew!

Ditch your old patterns, let’s renew!

If you feel like it is time to get some zing in your space, patterns are the perfect way to tone up interiors, even if you have limited space.

Would you also like to play with patterns? From stripes to geometrics, complex patterns, florals, motifs and animal patterns – the sky’s the limit! Spectiles has it all – for wall, floor and furniture. And at Megabuild? Lighting and shelves – all of which have their own angles and patterns to make your chosen space fluid, but lively. And we have the skills to bring the picture in your mind to life, in a three-dimensional, physical space.

Patterns are always in vogue and if you make it yours, then it’s great for your mental health. Experts say personalised spaces with specially chosen items make us feel safe and happy.

How to do it… first, it’s important to play with different sizes of the pattern(s) you have chosen. If you have a patterned wall, repeat that pattern on scatter cushions in the same direction, but on a smaller scale. Then, use similar or harmonious colours, even if they are bold, so that you can create a space that flows and use lighter and darker shades of the same colour for added effect. Blend complex and simple patterns to tone down the drama of your complex choice and if you have a floral or leafy theme, complement that with a houseplant.

The trick is to be careful with prints – don’t splash animal prints, for example, all over the place. Rather use one or two focal spots and then use those colours in the space so that you don’t overwhelm it. If you are opting for lines and angles, and elements like herringbone, make sure the direction of the pattern is in union otherwise the space will feel chaotic. Best to always start your chosen pattern from the lowest part of the area and work up, complementing as you go along. It must feel right to you. You’ll know what to do, just like we at Spectiles and Megabuild know what to do.

As the Spectiles staff say: The year of personalisation! Turn away from the old-school design rules and embrace designs that bring joy and look different. Breaking the interior design rules is a trend we like. Personalising your space is the key – does it make you smile with contentment? No matter whether you have overloaded the patterns or merely made a small adjustment, it is your choice to enjoy.
