From patio to wall – Reino renews it all!
"I have had a love for being creative since I was a child and was often in trouble for leaving nails lying around, causing flat tires in the driveway. I would saw small planks and build a kitchen cabinet, paint it and also cut and sew tiny curtains."Reino Meyer

Reino Meyer is the winner of this month’s Reader’s Revamp. He tells that as a child he often lived, built, created and dreamed in his own world. Today he is a passionate motivational speaker, and he also enjoys cement work, painting and music.
Reino is a people person, loves his Creator, likes the simplicity of life and as a school principal it was an honour for him to be able to touch children’s hearts. Reino's exterior wall decor and patio makeover projects caught our eye.
Reino says that he enjoys everything that he can improve or make more beautiful. Gar-dening and doing layouts are both favourites. Chalk painting is also a preferred pastime, and he is certified to run courses where he demonstrates and teaches his techniques.
The exterior wall redo project
What inspired you to change the wall and put up décor? What was your project goal?
For me, the outside of one’s house must flow inside. That’s where you start to see something of the resident. This wall was dead and boring. I wanted it to create a feeling of anticipation.
Did you apply any specific technique?
I decided to use vertical bands of grey paint, darker than the surrounding walls. So I measured the wall, worked out the symmetry, made pencil marks, drew lines and started painting.
What advice would you give to people who would also like to do something like this?
Personal taste and choice are very important. Don’t worry about the neighbours or what others will say or think. It is you and your uniqueness that is at issue here. Plan thoroughly. And just do it.
“I have never taken any Do-It-Yourself classes, except in a specific chalk paint product, and I believe that necessity is the mother of invention. At times I have had to do certain practical things with much struggle and prayer – and in the end I was able to perfect them all.”

The patio redo project
What design style did you follow when redoing the patio?
I wanted to create a welcoming and warm place to visit. But it also had to be different and that is precisely why I decided on a variety of coloured tiles. I worked out a repetitive pattern with the different blocks to form an overall image for the floor. The rest of the patio was also redone.
Is the paving painted or bought that way or where can one obtain it?
I bought these pavers from Banjo Pots in Swakopmund. Unfortunately, they closed their business this year.
How can readers tackle such a project cost-effectively?
See what you can do yourself; research prices at different places. Consider the following: Will someone be able to assist you if you need help; will deliveries be made to your door; would you be able to get more of the product if something goes wrong? Also ask an expert for advice if you are unsure.
A final word for readers who would like to try their hand at DIY?
If you have a dream, do it. Just try! You will make a success of it and remember: Being creative is therapeutic.
