Initiate peace and calm with Koi

I am sure most of you can relate to stressful situations: Non-paying customers, a moody boss, “cat fights” in the workplace - to name but a few.

A good hobby helps a lot to relieve stress. I deal with many clients in Namibia who keeps Koi fish and who are very passionate about their hobby.
I, myself, find it mesmerizing to watch them and to see how they grow and experience their “inter-fish communication”. Most kids are fascinated by the colourful fish.

A Koi pond is not only a perfect stress reliever, but also adds beauty to your backyard or any outdoor space.

Readers' questions and comments about Koi fish:

1. My pond is so green, I cannot find the fish between the algae strings.
Let us check out your filtration system: If the UV light is too small and the filtration speed of the water is incorrect, you will always struggle with too much algae.

2. Do my fish need a hiding place?
Yes: Just like in nature: big enough rocks,
plants or any structure enables the fish to hide when they want to.

3. Why do fish chase one another?
Spawning behaviour can look like one fish is chasing another. You'll usually observe this behaviour in algae-laden ponds in the spring when days are longer and water temperature rises.
The female will appear plumper and the males will chase the females, biting them to induce the release of eggs.

4. How do I treat for fish illnesses?
It is important to remove and quarantine badly-diseased fish to prevent the spread of
disease. When two or three fish are affected, or if the disease is infectious:
Change 25 to 30 percent of the water and remove any excess debris. Use a water treatment that neutralizes the heavy metals, chlorine and chloramines from tap water, thus fish will not be harmed.
Treat the entire pond with a remedy that destroys harmful bacteria, parasites and fungus. We have a range of Koi pond medicines at LIC Pool shop.

I am sure by now you have plenty questions: To get feedback, please email us at: [email protected]

We would gladly advise and assist in getting you started with your own Koi Pond.
