Making modular offices work

Making modular offices work

Office space, to be shared by many, had an interesting design evolution over the past century. Whereas offices of the 1920’s had large, open floor spaces and all the desks faced a supervisor, the idea of the cubicle (a three-walled system featuring desks and workspaces of varying height) became trendy in the sixties.

The boxed-in trend remained until the nineties. Then open-air planning became fashionable again, allowing workers mobility within the office space. Now the trendsetters in America aim for zero cubicles, no private offices nor completely open office plans. Instead they opt for collaborative spaces, allowing for spontaneous discussion and innovation.

Where is your company along the evolution timeline of office design? It doesn’t really matter, thankfully, because the trend is also to do what suits you. And if modular design tickles your fancy, read on.
Modular Office Space Think of modular design as the building blocks that we assemble in any way we like. Office buildings are the sum of modular parts such as walls, frames, doors, ceilings, and windows.
We divide the interior with additional space dividers and furnish it with desks, shelving, computers, ergonomic chairs and whatever else is needed. If the office needs to be expanded or re-divided to accommodate employees or to become a conference room, modular components such as full-size or half panels can be added or removed without altering the whole building.

Modular furniture, designed to hide unsightly cables, is most at home in the modular office. These furniture pieces are a wonderful asset for a work area with limited space. Modern designers concentrate on adjustable, space-saving units.
Transparent partitions can provide privacy yet enhance the feeling of space. Such visual transparency may be achieved with long curtains combined with light-sensitive appliances. These drapes soften the strict lines of a modular set-up. This kind of partition can create a close relationship between people in some sections yet allow for complete views among the sections.

If you wish something unique in modular design, why not consider patterned partitions? Choose colours to differentiate between departments within your company, subtly building a different theme for each. When you are able to blend trendy or formal with elegance, you get the desired look for your office.

When it comes to modular office design, allow the profile of your firm to determine the styles and variations.
