Minimise the surprise factor

Minimise the surprise factor

A beautiful car is only striking if it’s clean, running well and not giving you any mechanical issues. To get your vehicle in this form you need to clean it and have it serviced regularly.

Like aBathroom Scale vehicle, a swimming pool also needs its fair share of attention in order to save you unnecessary payments later.

It is like the bathroom scale: We walk right past it, because we are too scared to see what the numbers will be, once we actually get onto that scale.

Best is, open the pool cover, follow the advice below… At least you will have time to budget for possible problems. Let’s have a look at some of the most common pool problems:

Pool leak
Make a mark inside the white skimmer box of the pool and monitor the water level over a 5-day period. If the pool is covered and still the water drops more than 1 cm over this period, chances are very good there is a leak somewhere. Rather let us attend to this leaking pool in winter. Often there are a number of small leaks which are difficult to detect. In total, these leaks all add up and result in much water loss.

Pool pump
Swimming pool pumps do not like to be switched off for long periods of time. Run the pump at least once a week. If it sounds like the pump is running rough, it might a bearing starting to fail. We can run the pump on our test bench at Lic Pool and repair it.

Water chemistry
Do not let the pool water go green. It is very important to keep the pH, alkalinity and TDS levels in the desired range over the times when the pool is not in use. Incorrect chemical levels inside the pool will stain the pool and cause the pool surface to look faded. Too much chlorine in the pool can be equally harmful for the pool.

Pool cleaner
Do not leave the pool cleaner in the pool if it is constantly covered. Best is to store it somewhere where the pipes will not bend. A very long technical explanation is needed to better explain this but... trust me on this one.

These are some pointers to make sure you do not have unnecessary expenses regarding your pool. My best recommendation is: Phone Elaine at Lic Pool on 081 1437393 or email [email protected] for a free 21-point pool check-up.

Until next time.
