The La-Z-Boy® story
As early as 1927, two American cousins, Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker, changed the way people thought of seating. They started out in a garage and named their business the Kna-Shoe Manufacturing Company. Slowly but surely, they expanded and renamed their business Floral City Furniture. Before long they started designing novelty furniture, which included a slanted, folding wooden chair for outdoor use. The design of the prototype was shaped to fit the contours of a person’s body while sitting up or leaning back. The first of its kind!
In 1929, Edward and Edwin patented their reclining chair design. This became a huge success, especially after an upholstered version was produced. It gained the name “La-Z-Boy®”.
Through the 1950s and 1960s, the La-Z-Boy® chair was incredibly popular with both men and women, even with competing companies introducing their own variations of recliners. The two inventors passed away in 1988 and 1998, respectively, having made their millions.
In 1996, the company’s name was officially changed to La-Z-Boy® Incorporated. The headquarters are still in Michigan, USA and now makes more than 30,000 chairs and sofas each week. La-Z-Boy® lounge furniture is sold all over the world and is still the most popular recliner.
Nictus sources the furniture from South Africa, allowing customers to benefit from local, superior quality control, distribution, and dedicated sales support.
A range of modern, stylish La-Z-Boy® furniture may be bought at all Nictus branches country-wide. No longer just ‘dad’s chair’, the new generation of La-Z-Boy® furniture is designed to appeal to anyone who likes to put their feet up in ultimate luxury.
