Triangles of thought – when installing a pool

Triangles of thought – when installing a pool

Upon entering the Lic Pool store to enquire about a new pool, we’ll invite you to our boardroom before giving you a pricelist.
We prefer discussing your plans, as buying a pool is no simple quick step and therefore proper advice will help you make the best decision.
Let’s discuss a few quick pointers of three aspects you should consider when making the decision.

Who will be the main users of the pool?

Different people have different needs. For instance, depending on the age of your children, the pool might need a very shallow side which is large enough to allow them to learn to actually swim. Older kids will always nag parents for the biggest possible pool, but reality is, within a few years they will leave home and the poor parent will have to bear the brunt of a high chemical bill and maintain the now unused pool. If swimming lengths for fitness is your game, a proper lap pool would be the choice. If you compare gym fees plus fuel plus travel time, installing your own 25m lap pool makes financial sense.

Resale value of the property

A properly sized and designed pool can increase the value of your property… or have a negative effect on the value. I am often called out to clients to quote on repairing their pool, only to find out that the pool was designed and built so badly that the owner will be faced with continuous problems. Many a time, the builder who attempted to build the pool at rock-bottom pricing, skipped the more expensive epoxy piping, proper pipe sleeving and perhaps used too small filters and pumps. The pool normally holds water but after a year starts leaking, the mosaic starts falling off, copings start fading and so on. Uneven water levels inside the pool will also quickly show if the pool walls were built skew.

To fix such a mess is normally more expensive than replacing the complete pool. At the end of the day, the prospective home buyer will ask advice on the pool and use the problems of the pool as a way to bargain down the price.

Financial aspects

I normally ask our clients what they want to spend. With this in mind we can, from the first meeting, give the client the optimum product while still ticking the above two boxes with ease. In the fibreglass range we have sold many refurbished pools, with a guarantee, for a lot less than a new pool. Some items can be added to a pool later without affecting the functionality of the pool.
The above discussion points normally lead to a site visit to the client’s house and based on this, a quote follows.

Happy thinking and planning!

Until next time.
