Woven Storage Box
Woven Storage Box
SUPPLIES
- 1 empty cardboard box
- 1 big ball of thick white string
- Broad ribbon, enough to tape up the four corners of box
- Glue gun & glue sticks
- Craft knife & scissors
- Fabric or felt
Step 1
Cut off the closing flaps of the box. Keep one for later use.
On a side of your choice, mark the position and size of a handle opening and cut out with the craft knife.
Step 2
Make a division inside the box: Use the offcut that you saved in Step 1, measure to size and glue it in place to fill the gap between the two flaps on the bottom of the box.
Step 3
Measure the length of the box and cut strings 1.5 times the length of the box.
Glue string ends 2 - 3 cm apart around the bottom of the box.*
Using the broad ribbon and glue gun, glue the top and bottom ends to the four outside corners of the box.
*Paste an equal number of strings along each side, as you will braid the strings using 2 at a time.
Step 4
Weaving the string: Working on the side of the box, from the bottom upwards, glue the ends of two strings at a time and braid over and under the strings attached in previous step, also going over and under the ribbon on the corners.
Remember to pull the string tight every now and then. Glue the ends to finish off.
Step 5
When reaching the handle opening, cut and glue the strings around the inside.
Finish strings off just above the top part of the handle.
Glue string to the inside and weave around the top part of the handle (visible in Step 6 picture).
Step 6
Measure and cut out the fabric/felt for the inside and bottom of the box.
Measure and cut out the opening for the handles.
Glue the fabric/felt to the inside and bottom.
