Your dream pool: From delivery to dive-in

Your dream pool: From delivery to dive-in

So, in the last edition of HOUSEFINDER we went through all the steps of selecting the right company to build your pool. In this edition we will focus on aspects to take note of once the pool arrives at your home.

Let’s jump right in:

Many aspects should be taken into consideration
when installing a new swimming pool

Level of the pool
One of the first things you need to focus on, is the height the pool should be above ground level.

Very dry conditions to massive downpours are some of the climate conditions Namibians need to be aware of.

It is thus imperative that provision is made for large volumes of water from roofs and that storm water is able to flow around the pool and not erode the soil alongside the pool.

Line the pool up
If the pool is installed inside a courtyard, it is very important to decide beforehand with which wall the pool will be aligned. No two walls are normally 100% parallel and if you intend tiling around the pool, this is very important.

Pool pump and filter position
My advice is to place the pool pump and filter at a lower level than the pool shell. Pool pumps are not very effective when placed higher than the swimming pool. It is also advisable to place these items away from bedrooms. You don’t want your Sunday afternoon siesta interrupted by the hum of a pool filter.

Pool light and switches
The placement of the pool lights inside the pool should be such that they do not shine into your eyes. It is also advisable to plan for a switch point at a convenient place near the patio.

General
List as many of the above points as possible. Ask your pool builder for the program of events. This makes understanding the installation process better and allows you to understand what to expect.

It is always advisable to see that there is a clear walkway for the removal of excavation material. I normally advise protection for all narrow openings where wheelbarrows will be entering and exiting.

Once the pool is filled with water and cleaned, the pool builder should conduct a proper pool handover. It is very important to list all small items which you are uncertain about at this time. You can also ask for a written guarantee to make sure you are covered if something does break.
In summary, a new pool is expensive. Ask as many questions as needed and enjoy every step of the way with the new addition to the house.

Until next time.
