In our previous issue, Rebia Bandlow welcomed us into the colourful heart of her Windhoek home, where her kitchen, living room and music room revealed a playful blend of retro charm, eclectic glamour and deeply personal design choices. This month, we continue the journey through her house, moving into the more private spaces of the home.  

From a boy’s room with a calmer palette to a cheerful grandchildren’s room, a cottage-inspired guest room and a romantic main bedroom, every corner carries Rebia’s unmistakable touch. 

This room has a completely different style from the rest of the house. Was that intentional? 

Yes, definitely. This is a boy’s room, so I had to take that into account. You cannot bring in the same strong pinks and yellows here. I purposefully chose the light fitting and the colours are calmer, with more blues and greens. 

The grandchildren’s room has a lovely beach house effect… 

Yes, it has that fresh, coastal feeling. I wanted it to feel light, happy and comfortable for the children. Some weekends they sleep over at grandma’s house and they were so excited about this room.

How did you decide on the headboards in the grandchildren’s room? They are very unusual. 

Those pieces were actually meant to hang on a wall. When I saw them at Coricraft, I immediately liked them. I decided to buy them and add legs, turning them into headboards. It was a practical way of using something decorative in a completely different way. 

Tell us more about this downstairs guest room: cottage-inspired with some vintage charm…   

I bought the headboard and the bedside lamps. Then I added little decorative pieces to hang on them so that they would stand out more. And I love blue, so I often bring blue into my rooms. 

We did not want to waste the area beneath the stairs, so my husband and I decided to fit custom-made cupboards into the space. Now we have a valuable storage area instead of an empty corner which gathers dust. 

The main bedroom is very romantic, with lots of bling and sparkle. 

The idea started with the bathroom. I had purple tiles put into the bathroom and then carried that theme through into the bedroom. 

I had the curtains made with organza and frills. I also had the headboard made especially for the room. I wanted it to be higher, so that when I lean back, I can sit comfortably. I often see an idea in a shop and then have it made according to what I want. 

This feature wall is at the end of your passage, and many people do not know what to do with the end of a passage. Here, you used wallpaper and then added cut-out pictures around it. How did that idea come about? 

The pictures actually came from another wallpaper that had images on it. I bought it because I wanted to do something with it, but the background was blue and would not have worked here, because it would have made the passage too dark.
