Make the right choices to enhance a minimalistic look

An appealing home pool presenting clean lines with no clutter sets a mesmerizing ambiance. When the right combination of materials is used, your pool can make a quiet statement.

"Busy Namibians with hectic schedules need a spot where they can unwind and recharge their batteries. Having a home with a pool that has been well designed and is thoughtfully maintained, makes relaxation time sweeter. To actually plan the most compelling design to fit the surrounding property can be a puzzle, best solved with some professional help.

A pool is in essence nothing but a cavity filled with water. That sounds quite uninteresting but need not be. Let’s look at some pointers.

The corners of a modern pool are shaped much rounder than the traditional pools. There is a certain logic to this as making corners exactly 90 degrees opens them up to black algae.

I strongly suggest not using a conventional skimmer box, as it looks very bulky. There are minimalistic skimmer boxes available which have a wide and narrow opening and do a very good job, while complementing the pool’s design. It is also possible to use a suction point and no skimmer at all. The more skimmers you install, the more water movement there is and less chance for algae to take hold.

The tiles on the pool wall are a very important choice. Simply putting a deck around the pool does not always cut it. There are specifically designed pool tiles available on import and then cut and installed. These tiles are mitred 90 degrees at the corners of the pool. Mitreing means cutting and joining tile edges that have a 45-degree slant, so that when two are placed alongside each other, there is a perfect, seamless join.

Using mosaic below the pool coping can be done, but don’t be afraid to select tiles beyond the normal off-the-shelf glass mosaic. I have seen arty tiles combine with the colour of the water into a magic display. The larger the tiles, the fewer the grout lines and the easier the maintenance.

Water purity is essential. We need to remove all the small dust, chemical and organic elements inside that water. A normal filter and pool pump do not do the trick. Pool filters may look the same but there are big differences in the internals of the cheap filters and those filters used to produce crystal clean water. In the event of the water being full of little particles (invisible to the naked eye) switching on a pool light amplifies them and makes the water appear murky. To showcase pool water at night is another kettle of fish. These days pool lights can be so complicated that there are shops specializing purely in pool lights.

I suggest coming over to Lic Pool to see me and allow us to help design a pool that would best fit your lifestyle.

Until next time
