Natural allergy relief with Aromatherapy

When I visit a farm in Namibia in springtime, there is always someone (or even myself!) who starts sneezing, itching and rubbing their eyes – who isn't familiar with that? It is the well-known hay fever that I am sure many Namibians are acquainted with. We know hay fever can be caused by pollen, dust, fur and the like, and it affects us both physically and emotionally. After all, who wouldn't feel that way when constantly sneezing and itching?

  • Itching or swelling can disrupt daily activities
  • Coughing or congestion can disturb rest
  • Symptoms can affect work or school performance
  • Ongoing symptoms may cause stress, frustration, or anxiety
  • Allergies can limit social activities due to exposure concerns or visible symptoms

Why use aromatherapy oils for allergy relief?

Allergies may cause inflammation, histamine reactions and breathing discomfort. Essential oils can offer soothing aromatic, topical, or diffuser support. Some helpful oils are:

Peppermint

  • Soothes irritated nasal passages
  • Reduces sinus pressure
  • Supports airflow during congestion

Eucalyptus radiata

  • Clears stuffiness
  • Promotes easier breathing

Lemon

  • Helps break down mucus buildup
  • Freshens indoor spaces
  • Lavender
  • Reduces skin irritation
  • Supports sleep
  • Calms inflammation

A few ways to use these oils:

  • In a diffuser
  • In bath products
  • Apply to the skin (diluted)
  • As a room spray
  • In massage oils, salves, lotions or balms
  • In a roller and apply to temples and neck
  • Breathing them in directly from the bottle or an aromatherapy inhaler

MAKE YOUR OWN CHEST RUB

INGREDIENTS
  • 3 tbs solid coconut oil
  • 2 tbs shea butter
  • 1 tbs beeswax

Melt in a double boiler or pyrex dish over boiling water.

Do not boil, as it makes it grainy.

Remove from heat and allow to cool for 10 minutes.

Add the following essential oils and cool for 2 hours before using.

Apply to chest and bottom of feet for some allergy relief.

12 yrs and up (2% dilution)
  • 7 drops Lemon
  • 5 Rosemary
  • 5 Eucalyptus
  • 5 Lavender
  • 5 Peppermint
7 – 12 yrs (0.5% dilution)
  • 6 Eucalyptus
  • 8 Lavender

Essential oils must be used safely. Always dilute them to reduce irritation, and consult a healthcare professional before use for children, pregnant individuals, or anyone with health conditions.

Choose pure, high-quality oils from reputable sources. Start with low concentrations, increase only if needed, and consider personal sensitivities or allergies when selecting oils.
