HouseFinder had the pleasure of visiting Desert Pets and interviewed the owner, Jason Bester.

Jason, when was the company founded and by whom? What triggered the idea?

As a young boy, my father brought a marine tank from their holiday in Cape Town; a fire sparked and I guess that’s where it all started. I eventually went to study Marine Biology at CPUT in Cape Town and when I came back to Namibia I saw an opportunity to do what I love – work with animals. So, Desert Pets Namibia came to life.

Was the vision clear from the start or did you grow into it?

Founded on our deep love for animals and a commitment to excellence, Desert Pets wanted to position itself as one of Namibia’s leading pet and aquatic specialists. We are getting there!

Explain the growth in products/offerings from the start to now.

As we are only two years old, we have seen massive growth in staff knowledge and we have tailored our products to better fit the Namibian market. We try our best to satisfy the needs of our clients and their pets.

What is the company’s greatest strength and pride?

One of Desert Pets’ standout features is its advanced aquatic offering. With a strong focus on both freshwater and marine environments, we provide everything from tropical fish and corals to full aquarium systems, filtration, lighting and water treatment solutions.

Whether a beginner setting up your first tank or an experienced aquarist building a high-end reef system, Desert Pets offers professional guidance every step of the way. Our team also specializes in large-scale installations, including ponds and water features for lodges and private estates. We love bringing nature to life on an impressive scale.

As a Marine Biologist, when it comes to the more scientific part of the hobby (marine aquariums,) having the know-how helps with problem solving and getting the correct products to correct a chemical error in the water chemistry. Even when looking at the biological aspect of a tank – fresh or marine – it helps to maintain a tank as naturally as possible.

What guidance/education is given to pet owners and in which format?

We chat to walk-in clients, but are also available to give talks at shows, schools or other events. Customers are not just purchasing products. They are receiving guidance, education and ongoing support to help them succeed as pet owners.

What is your competitive advantage above other pet shops?

Our approach is a modern one. Our mission is to ensure sustainable, mindful care of the animals that share our clients’ homes and gardens. We have moved away from the image of the shopkeeper who sells cats or dogs and prefer to focus on carefully curated habitats alongside the human ones.

What makes Desert Pets a special outing for families?

We have created an experience that goes beyond shopping. With a welcoming atmosphere, a kids’ play area and a coffee shop, we offer a destination where families can spend time, learn and connect.
